Sugar....where to start! Like many of you, sugar is my Achille’s Heal. I can exercise, eat my veggies, drink my water, walk away from bagels, but put a cookie in front of me and I literally crumble. The more sugar I eat, the more I want, so tips to curb my sugar cravings matter to me and most likely to you as well. Learning about all the havoc, otherwise known as inflammation, that sugar causes in my body has also helped me to make better choices when it comes to my sweet tooth. Not completely - I don’t believe in punishing myself- but because I eat less sugar, I crave it less. And that’s a win in my book!
1. Say NO to Processed Food
The biggest change you can make is that if it comes in a box or bag STOP buying it in the first place. Sugar is hiding in all processed food. Stop eating processed food and you will automatically cut your sugar in take.
2. Choose WHOLE, fresh fruit over juice, dehydrated, or other fruit products
F.Y.I. - Fruit Snacks or Gummies are NOT real fruit! There is tons of sugar and very little fiber in these products. Choose berries, cherries, and citrus fruit whenever you can. Any kind of whole fruit is better than a glass of orange juice and definitely better then store bought fruit leathers!
3. Avoid FLAVORED Yogurt
Most commercial yogurts have as much sugar as a candy bar!
Eat plain, partial or full Greek yogurt instead and add berries, nuts, seeds and some honey or real maple sugar to sweeten as needed. It’s not only better for you, but will keep you fuller longer with out all of the unnecessary sugar!
4. Make your own Spaghetti Sauce
Stay far, far away from store bought, sauce in a jar. They are loaded with sugar, just like barbecue sauce and ketchup. The good news is that it is very simple to make
homemade tomato sauce and takes very little time too! Start with some good olive oil and crushed garlic in a saucepan. Heat on medium heat until the garlic is brown and fragrant.
Add a large can of crushed tomatoes and simmer for 20 minutes or more. Add some fresh basil, salt to taste, and any other herbs your desire. That’s it! No sugar necessary!
(Italian cooks don’t measure....sorry! You can blame my mom!)
5. Avoid Mixed Drinks
Rum and Coke, Gin and Tonic, Mojitos and the list goes on are all loaded with added sugar.
If you choose to drink, stay clear of mixed cocktails and instead try wine, Prosecco, or straight spirits mixed with club soda.
And because I can’t help myself....if you have a soda habit, diet or regular, start taking steps now to break it.
