Don't Hide Behind Your Sweater

Everyone loves sweater weather - me included. I live in New England, sweater weather was practically invented here! But the problem arises when we use those sweaters to “cover up” our bad habits at least until bathing suit season arrives. Which is why, come Spring, the newest fad diets will be in full force and so the cycle continues.

Getting healthy and staying healthy, only truly happens when we shift our thinking to a lifestyle mentality rather then a diet mentality. The “diet” no matter how good and effective it may seem, rarely if ever stands the test of time.

Living a healthy lifestyle means building sustainable habits around food, exercise, stress, sleep, and connections that will allow you to maintain your weight regardless of the season. Gaining 10 pounds over the holidays and then hiding it under a puffy coat for the next 6 months doesn’t need to be the norm nor does the diet and restrictions that usually follow. There is a better way.

Good, strong, healthy habits don’t change with the season because they are part of how you live your every day life. They support your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being and help you stay the course regardless of the time of year.

So enjoy sweater weather - have some apple crisp, make some soup, and drink that pumpkin latte, BUT do it mindfully, and NOT daily. It’s living in extremes that gets us off track and causes us to lose our balance and our healthy habits. Learning this now, can save you a whole lot of disappointment and frustration in your overall health come Spring. Lifestyle, not diet, every damn day and every season too!
